Sample Lesson Plan on Polygon

Lesson Plan in Geometry

I. Objectives:

At the end of the session, the students must be able to:
1. define and identify different kinds of polygons
2. identify and illustrate convex and non-convex polygon
3. identify the parts of a regular polygon
4. interact with the varied materials like handouts and ppt presentation.

II. Development of the Lesson:

A. Pre- Lesson
Show illustrations or cut-outs of polygons and non-polygons. Lead the students to the concept that polygons are made up of segments intersecting at their endpoints. Also, in a polygon, no two of its segments having common endpoint are collinear. Ask the students to identify which of the figures are polygons and which are not and justify their answers.

(Supplementary Material: Use the power point presentation on polygon.)

B. Lesson Proper:
Present the basic parts of polygons. Then ask students to count the number of vertices, sides and angles in each of the examples given earlier. Lead the students to identify the name for each example. State that polygons are named according to number of sides.

(Supplementary Material: Use the handout/brochure on polygons.)

Illustrate on the board two kinds of polygons – one that is non-convex and the other is convex.
Ask students to extend the sides. Then focus on the extended sides.

Ask to the students the following questions to lead the definitions of convex and non-convex polygons.

1. What did you observe about the polygons when segment EF was extended to line EF?
2. Are all the other vertices of the polygons on the same side of EF?

C . Post- Lesson:
After the given input, let the students make an output which is to make an art depicting the different polygons seen in real –life.

Quote for the day

"It is the glory of geometry that from so few principles,
fetched from without, it is able to accomplish so much."

Activity Presentation for Polygon

Geometry is such a fascinating subject.  And integrating interactive presentations using the prowess of "technology" would make it a more lot of fun while  learning.
